What stump removal does
When a tree comes down, the stump and its root flare stay behind. Stump grinding uses a machine to chip the stump out below grade so the space can be used again. Optimum Tree Service grinds stumps for Houston-area homeowners and gives a written estimate before work begins.
Why remove a stump
It is a tripping and mowing hazard
It can attract pests and rot over time and sprout unwanted growth
It blocks a new planting, path, patio or fence line
It makes the yard look unfinished
Grinding versus full extraction
Most residential stumps are ground, because grinding is faster, causes less disruption and leaves a bed of wood chips you can reuse or have hauled away. Full extraction pulls the stump and major roots out and is usually reserved for construction or special situations. We explain which fits your plan.
How grinding works
Assessment: we check access, size, utilities and what you plan to do with the space.
Depth: we choose a depth for lawn, replanting or building.
Grinding: the machine works the stump down below the surface.
Cleanup: chips are raked in, left for mulch, or hauled away.
Replanting after a stump is ground
Wood chips from grinding are best mixed out or removed before planting, because fresh chips can tie up nutrients in the soil. For replanting a tree in the same spot, deeper grinding and backfilling with fresh soil work best. Ask us and we will plan it with you.
Texas trees and stumps
Oak, pecan, pine, bald cypress, sweetgum, Chinese tallow and many other species leave stumps that regrow or decay differently. Some, like tallow, resprout from roots and need follow-up.
